  • 90nm - 90 nanometer.

  • BSOD - Blue Screen of Death.

  • C14- Most desktop computers and PS3 use the C14 inlet to attach the power cord to the power supply
  • CBA - Cutting Burst Area.
  • Cell - Also known as Cell Broadband Engine Architecture and abbreviated CBEA or Cell BE, this is the processing brain of the PS3.
  • CEX - This is a retail machine.
  • CFW - Custom Firmware.
  • Cinavia - A system implemented in Official Firmware 3.10, this was an effort to stop PS3 owners playing Pirated/Backed Up movies, those on MFW/CFW can install a Homebrew App to bypass this.
  • CoreOS - The first thing loaded by the main processor on boot (also the lowest level system files that are present in a firmware PUP file)
  • CRL - Certificate Revoke List.

D

  • DEX - This is a Debug machine.
  • DualShock 3 - Sony later released this PS3 Control pad, that has the Rumble Function, they were able to implemet Rumble when they settled with Immersion.

E

  • Emotion Engine - Also known as EE, this was the Graphical heart of all PS2's and was in the first released PS3's and later removed due to cost cutting/financial strategy and replaced by Software Emulation.
  • DISC.SFO - File to force you to use the original disc of the installed HDD Game.
  • EBOOT - This file will boot PS3 games, it contains various information, patches would have been released for eBoots signed with 3.55 or lowers Keys, so that they could be playable on 3.55.
  • ELF - ELF means Executable and Linkable Format, this naming of file is present on PSP, PS2 and PS3.
  • erk - erk means Encryption Round Key

  • FSM - Factory Service Mode

  • GLOD - Green Led of Death.

  • IDPS - ID Per System.
  • ISO - Also known as ISO Image, this is like a RAR file which combines the contents of a Disc(CD/UMD/DVD/Blu-Ray) into a single file, used on CFW PS3's for PS1/PS2/PSP and PS3 Games.
  • iv - means Initialization Vector

  • JIG - PSgrade loaded dongle to trigger Hypervisor to ask Syscon for setting Factory Service Mode flag

  • LPAR - Logical PARtition
  • lv0ldr - Level 0 Loader aka Boot Loader aka bootldr.
  • lv0 - Level 0.
  • Lv1.self - Level 1 Secure ELF aka Hypervisor

  • MFW - Mod Firmware.

  • PARAM.HIS - display the changelog of the game/homebrew on xmb.
  • PARAM.PFD - File used for secure the ps3 save data.
  • PARAM.SFO - File which contains parameters around/about the game such remote play, resolution, fw min game should use, region deny...
  • PKG - This is a package file used to install games, software/homebrew.
  • PlayStation Plus/PS+ - This is a premium service for PSN, it gives subscribers free games, discounts on games, early access to betas and free trials.
  • PPE - Power Processing Element, the PS3 has one of these, which contains 8 SPE's.
  • PS3_DISC.SFB - File used for activate sub-folder of the game such update, theme, and others.
  • PS3UPDAT.PUP - This is the Playstation Update Package firmware file, that you use to update your console.
  • PSL1GHT - Open Source Version of Sony PS3 SDK.
  • PSN - PlayStation Network.
  • PSVR - PS3 Voice Recognition

  • QA flag - Quality & Assurance flag enable debug settings.

  • RCO - file that contains icons, text and sound that appears on xmb but can not be modify from theme.
  • Remote Play - PSP, PSVITA, PC or phone used as sound/video monitor and controller. Not compatible with every game.
  • Repository - Storage Location, used for the purpose of safety or preservation

  • riv - means Reset Initialization Vector
  • RLOD - Red Led Of Death.
  • RSOD - Red Screen Of Death.
  • RSX - Also called Reality Synthesizer, this is the Graphical heart of all PS3's.

  • SDK - Software Development Kit.
  • Seed - is a number (or vector) used to initialize a pseudorandom number generator.
  • SELF - Secure ELF.
  • SEN - Sony Entertainment Network.
  • SEX - This is a shop/demo machine. Not official name.
  • SID-Code - Source Identification Code.
  • Sixaxis - This was the first control pad released with the PS3, it was missing the Rumble Function, they had to remove the Rumble Function due to loosing a lawsuit with Immersion.
  • SKU - Stock Keeping Unit.
  • SPE - Synergistic Processing Elements.
  • SPU - Synergistic Processing Unit.

  • Themes - Can be static, dynamic and with different backgrounds. You can create your own theme on OFW.

  • VMC - Virtual Memory Card - This is used for PS1/PS2 saves on the PS3.

  • XMB - Xross Media Bar - Graphical Interface User designed as a cross. Used on the OS on PSX, PSP and PS3 and few other Sony Products.

  • YLOD - Yellow Led Of Death.
