The benefit of microconsoles over DRM-laden PS4[edit source]

Let me debunk that for you with this simple link that shows that watching video takes between 76.5W (Youtube), 84.7-90 W (Netflix) and 93-100 W (Blu-Ray). Mind you that it is only media that the PS is capable of playing (Video : H.264/MPEG-4 AVC/AAC, up to High profile, up to level 4.2 ; Audio: up to 6 channels, up to 3456Kbps), so no 4K h265/HEVC which you can play nicely using a Minix NEO X8-H Plus, much below its peak 15W rating (11-13.5 W real world).

A precalculation:

A PlayStation 4 - 8core has between 5,666666667 and 7,407407407 times more power usage while only doing h264 1080p/FullHD - than - a quad core micro device running Kodi showing h265/HEVC 2160p/4K content with a S812 chipset for DTS/Dolby HW decoding will use.

PS4: 2073600 pixels / 76.5W = 27105,882352941 pixels per Watt

Minix: 8294400 pixels / 13.5W = 614400 pixels per Watt

thus you can do 22,666666667 times more pixels per Watt with the Minix NEO X8-H Plus in the above example.

Marketing might thus even call the Minix over 22 times more powerfull/efficient for playing media than a PS4....

4K microconsoles[edit source]

  • Minix NEO X8-H Plus - HDMI 1.4b
  • Renkforce 4K XBMC Android TV-box B4S - HDMI 2.0
  • Nvidia Shield Android TV - HDMI 2.0 - 4K playback at 60 FPS (VP9, H265, H264)
