Overview
Each PlayStation motherboard contains a BTL-driver IC, driving the spindle motor, sled motor, focus coil and tracking coil. The inputs are driven by the DSP.
All of these are 4-channel BTL drivers.
They naturally run relatively warm (hence the large ground pads for heatsinking), but should never get too hot to touch (->IC or something connected to it is probably defective or shorted). All of these have thermal shutdown as a safety feature.
For the Rohm ICs, datasheets are available online.
