Overview[edit | edit source]

Each PlayStation motherboard contains a 4-channel BTL-driver IC, driving the spindle motor, sled motor, focus coil and tracking coil. The inputs are driven by the DSP.

They naturally run relatively warm (hence the large ground pads for heatsinking), but should never get too hot to touch (->IC or something connected to it is probably defective or shorted). All of these have thermal shutdown as a safety feature.

For the Rohm ICs, datasheets are available online.

ICs used[edit | edit source]

Rohm[edit | edit source]

  • BA6398FP (PU-7, PU-8 (-11))
  • BA6397FP (PU-8 (-21 and up), PU-16)
  • BA6392FP (PU-18)
  • BA5977FP (PU-20, PU-22, PU-23)
  • BA5947FP (PM-41)

Panasonic[edit | edit source]

  • AN8732SB (PU-22, PU-23, PM-41)
    • Using this IC instead of the Rohm part also requires changing some other components
