Network Update
Network Update is a feature on all PSPs that allow a user to update their system software over WiFi. This requires a Memory Stick that has enough space to hold the latest update Eboot, and a PSP that doesn't have the latest system software installed.
System Software[edit | edit source]
The System Software can be checked from the XMB. To do this:
- Boot into the XMB.
- Move left to Settings.
- Move down to System Settings.
- Move down to System Information.
- The line with System Software will have the System Software version.
Also, there are various other tools that can check your System Software Version.
Updating[edit | edit source]
As long as a wireless hotspot is available, a user can download the update EBOOT over WiFi regardless of battery life available. Also, the user has to prepare the PSP so that the download and the update can successfully complete without errors. If the user is on any official firmware and has no firmware spoofers enbaled, the user can just download and run the update. However, if a user has any firmware spoofers enbaled or has hex-edited their system software version, they must undo the changes before Network Update is initalized.
Network Update Hacks[edit | edit source]
The function of Network Update can be changed so that it can either look at a different address for updates or be used as a redirect to other apps or functions. Also, this is done to prevent accidental upgrading that can make a user lose the custom firmware. (This can be resolved by running the Pandora Battery unbricker and then re-upgrading normally back to custom firmware.
Address Hacks[edit | edit source]
With some hex-editing, the address in which Network Update looks for updates can be changed to a different value. As long as the website has a newer update than the one installed on the PSP, Network Update will report that, and allow the user to download, and update their system.
One example of this working is in Dark_Alex's 3.80 and 3.90 M33 firmwares. An option in recovery has been added that allows the PSP to check dark-alex.org instead of the normal Sony site. The update only checks for changes to the base firmware. (Revisions) However, when the option is disabled, Network Update will function normally.
Icon Redirect[edit | edit source]
Another way where Network Update was manipulated was where the PSP launched Network Update.
The most popular way would be where the icon would cause the system to reboot, or shutdown depending on which combo of buttons are pressed while selecting Network Update. This also allows a user to enter recovery if needed.
The other way would be where the icon will redirect to a 'eboot.pbp' file of an application or other homebrew.
In either way, custom files have to be flashed in order to work.
