SATA 2.5" with max height of 9.5mm, minimal storage size 160GB (145 HDD models and 291 SSD models comply to that). Ofcourse if you externalise the harddrive there is a whole world of 3.5" drives that are larger in storage size and also cheaper to be gotten.
SSD can be used, but it seems that on the PS4 there is even less incentive (compared to PS3) to replace the drive for a SSD, best price/performance are still 7200rpm drives.

it is unsure if TRIM is enabled by default for UFS on the PS4, but on BSD in general it can be enabled with tune2fs -t enable : http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=28004 see also : http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/docs/html/ssd.html
on the standard 500GB (465.8 GiB) harddrive, there is 408 GB useable for the user, thus 57,8 GB is reserved for the systemfiles/filesystem.
