=Linux/BSD distributions=
Linux/BSD distributions must conform to some aspects before they are useable on the PS3:

* PPC64 ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC PowerPC] 64bit), recommended or PPC32 ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC PowerPC] 32bit)
* Kernel patches etc, for PS3 support (e.g.: [http://173.220.0.157/~glevand/public/ps3/linux/ Linux] / [http://173.220.0.157/~glevand/public/ps3/freebsd/ BSD])
* Boot support for GPT ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table GUID Partition Table])

Side note : You can run a GNU/Linux distribution (OtherOS++) with a MSDOS partition table, but GPT is (very) recommended.
