SCPH-50009
The only PS2 model released on the Chinese market, available from December 20th, 2003, for a price of RMB 1988. Its retail variant is always a satin silver fat H- or I-chassis console. It has its own dedicated game region ("NTSC-C") rather than the NTSC-J region that is used on the other Asian PS2 consoles (Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan). The DVD region code is 6, which is also a dedicated China-only DVD region code. As another specialty, it is the only retail PS2 console to have a third ROM(-section) other than BOOT and DVD, which contains a Chinese character set. While this rom section is required to boot most of NTSC-C games due to software checks, only 2 of them really use it (Ape Escape 2, Viorate no Atelier: Gramnad no Renkinjutsushi 2). CDVDMAN included in games for that region perform additional check for valid value in 0x1F402038 register. This model is also the only one known to utilize the CDVD S command 0x27 to launch PS1 games.
Another oddity is found: DTL-H50009 is the only PS2 console that shares the ROMVER with a PSX (DVR). This console has 1.80 ROMVER like the 1st gen PSX.
Only very few games were released in China, as the PS2's release for the Chinese market happened during a period where game consoles were heavily regulated and for the most part actually banned.
The following Chinese PS2 models are confirmed to exist:
- SCPH-50009 (Satin Silver)
- DTL-H50009 (Satin Silver)
- DTL-H50009J (Black)
Dragon Modchip
The "Dragon" was an exclusive Modchip made specifically for the Chinese PS2 consoles.
It's also the reason why Sony stopped producing Chinese models.
