Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. uses DNAS (Dynamic Network Authentication System), a proprietary authentication system, to help protect copyright and security in connecting the PS2 or PSP™ system to a network. DNAS may retrieve information about a user's hardware and software for authentication, copy protection, account blocking, system, rules, or game management and other purposes. The information collected does not identify the user personally. The unauthorized transfer, exhibition, export, import or transmission of programs and devices circumventing its authentication scheme may be prohibited by law.

DNAS seems to be also used in the Broadband Navigator. See [1].

DNAS seems to use some data from the HDD. See Hard_Drive#Security_and_authentication.

Bypassing DNAS[edit | edit source]

There are mainly two ways to bypass DNAS. The first one is to patch the game or the OS. The second is to use a fake DNAS server.

Patching PS2 games binaries[edit | edit source]

krackHEN made DNAS-net Patcher, a patcher tool that works on some PS2 games (compatibility list to do).

The PS2 online gaming community is alive. Most GameSpy powered games are playable with DNS which redirect to OpenSpy servers, DNASrep, and stuff... Some non-GameSpy are playable with recreated servers too. DNASrep emulates the server-side DNAS juju, and replays packets that were captured back when the DNAS servers were still alive. Problem is that not all games had their DNAS network packets captured. "unsupported" games need patching which implies disassembling, REing, somewhat tedious and boring work...

So krackHEN made the DNAS-net Patcher application, which scans files and patches the common DNAS libraries, to save time. Of course this patcher cannot patch games with obfuscated/packed/hashed libraries, but it can handle EE RAL dumps and puke ps2rd-like codes.

Jak X, Ratchet: Deadlocked, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain, Amplitude, Killzone and maybe other games published by Naughty Dogs use a network framework called Medius.
