To Do

Sony's SKU-numbering is somewhat inconsistent, which makes giving a simple overview quite challenging.

Suffixes

  • R (e.g. SCPH-30004R)
    • Denotes a console that has a version of DVD Player preinstalled which supports the remote control out of the box (no DVD Player update necessary)
    • Only used on SCPH-3000X SKUs, since this is the only SKU/model number where there would be any ambiguity regarding out-of-the-box remote control support
    • This IS also denoted on the console model sticker itself

Suffixes (Japan/Asia)

Suffixes in Japan/Asia seem to work a bit differently than in other regions

  • Color suffixes for color variations and some special editions not denoted on the console itself
    • Different color variants of the same SKU have different suffixes behind the model number, e.g. :
      • CB (for charcoal black)
      • CW (for ceramic white)
      • SS (for satin silver)
      • PW (Pearl White SCPH-50000 Summer 2004 limited edition)
    • This is NOT (always) denoted on the console model sticker itself, but on the original packaging/box
  • Bundle and special edition suffixes denoted on the console itself
    • Some PS2 bundles got their own SKU-suffix, including on the console itself, despite the hardware not being any different to the non-bundled variant, e.g. :
      • TB (Toys Blue SCPH-39000, only sold at Toys R Us stores)
      • GT (on the Gran Turismo 4 Prologue bundle in Japan and Asia)
      • GU (the limited Gundam bundle in Japan)
      • MB/NH (the Midnight Blue SCPH-50000MB/NH, bundled with Network Adaptor, HDD and BB Navigator software)
    • In other instances, Sony instead decided to give bundles their own model number variant
