Building upon the foundation of Nintendo's Super NES controller, the PlayStation controller introduced a significant innovation: a second pair of shoulder buttons designed for the middle fingers. This addition aimed to enhance navigation within the 3D environments that PlayStation was specifically designed to render. By incorporating shoulder buttons for both index and middle fingers, the controller enabled intuitive two-way depth control. To mitigate the potential for a less secure grip resulting from the repositioning of the middle fingers to the shoulders, the PlayStation controller incorporated ergonomic grip handles.
