The PS5 (standard version with the disc drive) includes a Ultra HD Blu-ray drive that can play a variety of disc formats[1]. Alternatively, just like the PS4, it has limited support for local media playback, using a USB drive. The Media Player functionality is baked in the system software, not needing a optional download of a separate application like it was on the PS4.

Disc Support[edit | edit source]

  • The digital only version of the PS5 cannot play any disc, even if a external drive is inserted via USB.

Local Media Support[edit | edit source]

  • Local media playback is supported on a USB Drive if the USB is formatted as EXFAT or FAT32.
  • In order for the media files to be recognized, the user needs to create a folder on the root of the USB drive, called "Music" for music, any folder for video files and "Pictures" for photos. PS5 will not see the content if it's not in a folder.
